Today I thought I would reflect on other Alchemist quote:
“’I’m alive,’ he said to the boy, as they ate a bunch of dates one night, with no fire and no moon. ‘When I’m eating, that’s all I think about. If I’m on a march, I just concentrate on marching. If I have to fight, it will be just as good a day to die as any other. Because I don’t live in my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. You’ll see that there is life in the desert, that there are stars in the heavens, and that tribesmen fight because they are part of the human race. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living right now.’” ~p. 87-88
This quote is very powerful because people are always living for the next moment, or holding on to the past too much. We all fall victim to this way of thinking. We should listen to this quote and be engaged in the moment.
We are always holding on to what exciting thing is going to happen next in our lives. We count down the days until the moment/event arrives. While this is fun, you cannot waste the days by only thinking about what is coming up next. Each day there should be moments of happiness and excitement, not just waiting for the next big thing.
When we hold on to the memories of the past that are good, it can make us want, and miss the old times, which can cause sadness. When we hold on to the memories that are bad, they also cause sadness. While life is beautiful and it is fun to think of past times, its better to think of them in small amounts of time, and to focus on how to improve your life now from those moments.
So many people say they want to do things, but they do not make time for them. There is a say that goes something like, “You make time for things you want to do”. Basically, the things you put effort into, are the things you really want to do. From the quote at the beginning of this article, the man puts effort, and total concentration, into whatever he is doing. With social media today, it is easy to get distracted or to spend hours checking onto other people’s lives, instead of focusing on what is in right front of you. Just think about how the man only focuses on eating when he is eating. This sounds almost impossible, as the mind wanders so much. I think this quote is a good reflection on how we take so many things for granted. We should always live in the moment and not try to predict what is going to happen in the future, or focus to much on the past.
